Keep an eye to the sky this afternoon as storms may boil up in the area...

Upper air analysis shows that our atmosphere is very unstable, but capped (has a lid on it.) For chasers and spotters this is sometimes known as a “Loaded” situation. Conditions/parameters are there for the taking, but a bubble of air must first break the cap (lid) to turn into a thunderstorm. The more sunshine we see and as the dryline begins to move into western sections of the area this afternoon we should see some storms pop up. Storms that do break the cap will likely go severe rather quickly. Keep your eyes on the radar and to the sky later today as we may be on the tail end of a severe weather outbreak.

I am out of my office today, but will be checking in and providing updates as needed.

A possible active weather day on tap for Denton...

The Severe Thunderstorm Risk is elevated today. All of North Texas is in an area depicted by the Storms Prediction Center (SPC) with a slight chance of severe thunderstorms. The SPC also has an area just to the east of I-35 showing a Moderate Risk of storms.

We will have a dryline and a cold front in the area later today, so conditions will need to be monitored.

I am waiting on data to come in on upper level atmosphere conditions and should be able to pin down the highest risk areas later this morning.

So I’ll be writing more later as this is just a “Heads Up” post.

A few storms roaming the area but most activity is east of Denton...

Here is the latest NOWcast Courtesy of the National Weather Service:

SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL CONTINUE THROUGH MID
AFTERNOON MAINLY EAST OF I-35. HEAVY RAIN AND CLOUD TO GROUND

Most of this activity is just to our east. However, be aware of weather conditions if you are outdoors today. Be aware of lightning should a storm move near your location.

Temperatures Today - Cooler Than I Thought...

The warm front is finally moving up from the south and is about on top of us at the time of this post. Since it was slower moving and with a thicker cloud cover, I doubt that we will make it to that 70 degrees that I forecasted for today. Sorry about that.

You will still notice a change in the air this evening as the humidity increases. With that - there may be some patchy Dense Fog overnight. Be careful tonight and in the morning.

Other than the high temperature forecast bust (incorrect) today – The rest of the forecast is on track. Unsettled is still a good word to describe our weather over the next week. But then it is spring time in Texas, so what should we expect…

There will be a couple of chances of severe weather over the next several days. Forecasted timing of these events will be determined after more data comes in. We, at the DRC’s Denton Weather Blog, will keep you informed.

I hope that everyone is enjoying their weekend.

Denton Weekend Weather Will Be Unsettled...

As if you didn’t know, a cold front has moved through the area this morning and it will keep it cloudy and cool for the day. I’ve even seen some reports of drizzle and light rain around the area. We’ve probably already seen our high temperatures today and will hang in the 50s for the rest of the day. This will probably be the coolest day for the next 5 days.

There is an upper level disturbance in northern Mexico that will be moving across the area tomorrow and will give us a chance of some showers and thunderstorms. They probably will occur during the first part of the day and then move on out with the disturbance. The humidity will be increasing as the winds will come back to the south during the day tomorrow and begin to transport some gulf moisture towards us. This will set us up for some more sticky feeling spring weather on Sunday.

On Monday a pretty strong disturbance will be moving out of the Rockies and will drag the west Texas dryline towards us. With warmth and moisture in place there could be some severe weather on Monday. I'll definitely keep an eye on that for you. Local storm spotters and chasers - keep Monday on your pending chase day list.

Overall expect a warm and humid weekend with a chance of showers and storms on Saturday. High temperatures tomorrow should make it into the lower 70s and then we will be pushing the 80 degree mark on Sunday. Tonight we will have a chilly low in the upper 40s. Saturday night and Sunday night lows will be in the lower 60s.

Warm and Windy for Denton...

I’ve just returned from a short Easter vacation, but I didn’t miss any exciting weather nor did I experience any while I was away.

Warm and windy weather will be on tap for Denton for the remainder of the week. The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for today as winds will be gusting at times up to 30mph – mainly this afternoon.

The humidity will be on the increase through the weekend. So I expect it to feel even more like Spring as we get a bit sticky. There is a chance of showers and thunderstorms over the weekend. This chance is a slight one and it seems that an even better chance will come early next week.

We are in what is known as a “zonal flow”. This means that the upper level winds (jetstream) will mainly flow in a west to east pattern without too much change to the north or south. However, when we get into a zonal flow pattern there are occasional disturbances that move along the flow (causing a northward or southward kink) and trigger the development of fronts or move the dryline. A couple of those disturbances will be the culprit behind the chances of rain over the weekend and next week.

Have a great Wednesday everyone.

The Easter Bunny May be Wearing a Rain Bonnet Instead of an Easter Bonnet...

Well it does look like the Easter bunny will dodging rain drops as showers will probably dampen some areas on Sunday. I was hoping that this system would be on its way out of the area by Sunday morning, but it seems to have slowed down a bit.

In an eggshell eh - I mean nutshell – Look for nice conditions for a couple of days with the weather going downhill Saturday night into Sunday. Sunday will be cloudy breezy and cool with an occasional shower or thunderstorm. Keep in mind if you are out and about Sunday and you hear thunder then lightning will be a danger to you. Make the best of it but be careful.

Happy Good Friday.

Spring Has Sprung!

Well folks today is the first official day of Spring (equinox happened at 12:48am local time)and it's going to feel like it here in Denton.

We will be seeing mostly sunny skies with high temperatures in the 70s for the next couple of days with a bit of a breeze.

The jury is still out on the rain for Easter Day. You'll definitely need a jacket while hunting eggs, but hopefully not a rain slicker. I'm thinking that the chance of rain will end quickly Sunday morning. More on that as I get more data to look at.

Have a great Thursday everyone!
